The opposition National Democratic Congress has demonstrated its preparedness to stage series of demonstrations against the President’s nominee for the chairperson slot of the Electoral Commission.
The President, based upon the vacancy created as a result of Charlotte Osei’s dismissal which was contingent on her refusal to abide by the rules and laws of the land in the arena of breaching procurement rules, has appointed Mrs Jean Adukwei Mensa as the new Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.
This development appears to have angered the opposition party, hence, this resolve to hit the streets of Accra and the other big cities in the country.
Speaking to press men after the party’s statement rejecting the nomination of the boss of the Institute of Economic Affairs, Jean Mensa, the General Secretary of the NDC had this to say;
“Akufo-Addo thinks he can appoint an assign of the NPP and force her on our necks! This will never happen! We shall not allow this naked robbery to go on. He has appointed Jean Mensa whose husband is a known member of the NPP and who herself is a sympathizer of the ruling party to be at the helm of affairs of the EC! The NPP wants to entrench their position in power with Jean Mensa’s appointment. The other nominees are all members of the New Patriotic Party” Mr. Asiedu Nketia roared.
Prior to this press conference and statement, it was being alleged in certain circles that the leadership of the opposition party were in a crunch meeting to deliberate on the nominated persons for the EC job. The party, according to sources close to the leadership, said that they were vehemently opposed to the nomination of Jean Mensa as new EC Chairperson because of her NPP affiliation. The party would express their unhappiness in a press conference which they have since done.
The party, according to the General Secretary of the party, will soon come out to call their members and other political parties to join them in demonstrating against the nomination of Jean Mensa.
